Sacramento, CA – Today, the 200,000 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council announce their solidarity with SEIU-California and SEIU-USWW President David Huerta and call for his immediate release. The following statement may be attributed to Mark Ramos, president, UFCW Western States Council and UFCW Local 1428:
“The City of Los Angeles is hurting this weekend with the violent and intentionally harmful ICE raids that have ripped families and communities apart. These are working people—our brothers and sisters. And we won’t stand by while brutal, military-style ICE raids are perpetrated only to instill fear in our friends and neighbors and silence workers and anyone who dares to speak out against injustice.
“We demand the immediate release of David Huerta and that of all other individuals caught in these cruel raids happening all over the country. David Huerta is a father, a fierce leader, and a champion for justice for all working people. He and those detained for exercising their First Amendment rights and advocating for immigrant workers at an ICE raid belong at home with their family and loved ones, not in federal detention.
“UFCW is proud to stand alongside our brother David and ensure every person in America feels safe and protected when exercising their First Amendment rights.”
