Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded Governor Gavin Newsom for signing SB 616 (Gonzalez) into law. SB 616 will increase the number of paid sick days all workers have access to from three to five.
“Governor Newsom’s signature on this important bill shows that our state still values working people and will do what it takes to keep our communities healthy,” said Andrea Zinder, president, UFCW Local 324. “We’re glad that the California Legislature and the Governor heard our members’ passion for SB 616 and saw that providing workers with more paid sick leave prevents the spread of deadly diseases throughout our communities. Five paid sick days is a step in the right direction and workers will be less likely forced to risk their livelihoods to do the right thing and stay home when they’re sick because of this bill. UFCW members are proud to have supported this important legislation.”
SB 616 takes effect on January 1, 2024.
