Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee for passing AB 446. AB 446 will prohibit businesses from using the personal information of a consumer to adjust the price of goods based off their individualized data profile, a practice known as surveillance pricing (SP). This bill will also ensure consumers have the right to a standard pricing option and establish enforcement mechanisms, including a private right of action and civil penalties, to prevent discriminatory and unfair pricing practices
“UFCW members work in California’s local grocery stores and community pharmacies and see how technology is being used to maximize profits at the expense of consumers,” said Todd Walters, president, UFCW Local 135. “They see how their own data is being collected and could potentially be used to increase prices when they shop in the store they work at. Customers deserve to be charged the same price for the same product, that’s why UFCW is proud to sponsor AB 446 by Assemblymember Chris Ward.”
