Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded the Assembly Business and Professions Committee for passing SB 378 (Wiener) in a 16-0 vote. SB 378 will allow consumers to seek civil penalties against online marketplaces that advertise illicit cannabis and hemp. The following statement may be attributed to Mark Ramos, president, UFCW Western States Council and UFCW Local 1428:
“The growth of the illicit cannabis industry has made it easier for kids to access illegal cannabis and intoxicating hemp products through online advertising. This poses serious risks because those products are untested, unregulated, and untaxed. We can’t let illicit operators circumvent the safety regulations established under Proposition 64 and California regulations. That’s why we’re proud to support SB 378, a bill that empowers California residents to crack down on unlicensed operators and strengthen protections for our kids and public health.”
