Sacramento, CA – The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauds the California Assembly for supporting AB 1066 (Gonzalez), which ensures workers who are on strike or locked out by their employers are eligible to collect unemployment insurance benefits.
“We’re glad the California Assembly voted to support locked out workers and workers exercising their right to strike. Striking is the last resort of workers working to influence working conditions, but employers keep too many workers in fear because they are one paycheck away from missing the rent or a car payment,” said Donna Villagomez, a Von’s employee and member of UFCW Local 324. “When workers are eligible for unemployment insurance, they can stand up for fair treatment and workplace conditions knowing their families won’t become homeless. We applaud the Assembly for supporting AB 1066 and look forward to working with the Senate to protect California’s workers standing up for the workplace justice they deserve.”
