Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded the Assembly Labor Committee for passing SB 442 (Smallwood-Cuevas). SB 442 protects workers, the public, and improves the customer experience by adding proper guardrails in grocery retail stores that utilize self-checkout. This bill ensures that at least one manual option remains available to customers, while also safeguarding the self-checkout clerk by relieving them of other duties. “We’ve heard countless stories of our members left alone in the front of the store, or with just one other person, because their employers over-rely on self-checkout machines to maximize profits.
