Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee for passing AB 564 (Haney). AB 564 will allow California’s legal cannabis industry to survive against the growing threat of the illegal market by reverting the cannabis excise tax rate to 15 percent. The following statement may be attributed to John Frahm, president, UFCW Local 5:
“California’s cannabis excise tax rose to 19% on July 1, and businesses across the state are saying the increase will force more legal operators to close and push consumers to the illicit market. When legal businesses close, the state doesn’t receive that tax revenue. AB 564 is a critical piece of legislation to protect consumers from untested and unregulated cannabis products and keep the industry afloat.”
