Sacramento, CA – Today the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded Governor Gavin Newsom for signing AB 1775 (Haney) into law. AB 1775 will give local governments the authority to allow cannabis retailers and microbusinesses that have licenses to operate cannabis consumption lounges to conduct additional business activities, such as preparing and selling non-cannabis-infused food, selling non-alcoholic beverages, and allowing and selling tickets for live musical or other performances. “UFCW members were proud to support this important bill to help bolster our state’s consumption lounges. By allowing cannabis businesses to branch out in a limited capacity, we can strengthen California’s legal cannabis industry in the face of high taxation, restrictive regulations, and harsh competition from the illicit cannabis market. Legal cannabis businesses have been disadvantaged compared to bars, clubs and other venues that can serve alcohol, not to mention illegal gatherings serving cannabis. We applaud Governor Newsom for signing this bill into law to strengthen our cannabis industry.”
