Expanded Paid Sick Leave for Workers Passes First Assembly Committee

Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded the Assembly Labor Committee for passing SB 616 (Gonzalez), which will increase the number of paid sick days all workers have access to from three to seven.

“Paid sick leave saves lives – it’s plain and simple,” said Arvella Morris, a grocery store worker and UFCW Local 770 member. “Workers need the ability to stay home when they’re sick and not have to worry about  losing pay, or worse, their job. Over the past couple of years we’ve learned how essential it is to our communities and public health for people to stay home when they’re sick and to not infect others. But when you have to choose between feeding your family or clocking in with a cold, what do you think workers decide? SB 616 will give workers a safety net of paid sick days to use to keep the public healthy and ensure that they’re going to be able to pay rent that month.”
