FTC & CA Attorney General Hear UFCW Members’ Call; Act to Block Proposed Megamerger between Kroger and Albertsons

Sacramento, CA – The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council released the following statement on the Federal Trade Commission and California Attorney General’s decision to block the proposed merger between Kroger and Albertsons. The following statement may be attributed to Amber Parrish, executive director, UFCW Western States Council:

“When the proposed merger was announced in October 2022, UFCW members were afraid of the consequences, as they would have felt the effects of this potential merger the most. In 2015, many of our members went through a disastrous merger between Albertsons and Safeway, where many stores were divested to a Northwest regional company named Haggen. Mere months after the merger, Haggen filed for bankruptcy. Members lost their jobs during this situation and our communities lost convenient access to safe food and medicine.

“We applaud Attorney General Bonta and the FTC for standing up and ensuring UFCW members can go to sleep tonight knowing they will be able to keep their jobs, provide for their families, and ensure our communities have access to fresh, affordable food.”
