Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers Western States Council applauded the California State Senate’s approval of AB 2530 (Wood), which provides timely and affordable access to Covered California insurance for workers who lose health benefits due to a labor dispute. The following statement may be attributed to Todd Walters, President, UFCW Local 135:
“We’ve seen it time and time again, unscrupulous employers gain an unfair advantage over workers at the bargaining table because by exercising their right to strike in a labor dispute, workers and their families can lose access to health care and medicine. From grocery workers to pharmacists, no worker should worry that fighting for the contract they deserve will come at the cost of their family’s health. AB 2530 will give our members, and all of California’s workers, peace of mind when they’re exercising their right to strike and obtain the strongest contracts possible. We’re glad the Senate voted to support this important bill and urge the Governor to sign this bill immediately when it reaches his desk.”
