UFCW Essential Workers Endorse Malia Cohen for Controller

Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers Western States Council announced its endorsement of Malia Cohen for California State Controller. The California State Controller is the state’s accountant, with important oversight and auditing duties. The Controller also has a strong voice in the financial markets as a board member for the state’s large public employee retirement systems and is a steward for a number of important state programs from housing finance to conservation of land.

“UFCW’s essential workers know Malia Cohen will be an unwavering champion for working families, and take the bold steps needed to help California’s economy grow by positioning workers to thrive,” said Amber Baur, executive director, UFCW Western States Council. “Malia is a dedicated public servant and will prioritize making sure our public dollars secure good-paying jobs, safe workplaces, and a strong economic recovery. We know Malia is the right choice to represent the people of California and we are proud to support her candidacy for Controller.”

“Malia Cohen knows how inequality affects the life of working people, and is committed to uplifting working families through building affordable housing, protecting workers’ retirements and investing in job training and workforce development,” said Jim Araby, director of strategic campaigns, UFCW Local 5. “Working people are struggling throughout the state and need someone like Malia in office to ensure they don’t get left behind in California’s pandemic recovery. UFCW members are proud to support Malia Cohen and will proudly call our neighbors and knock on doors to get her elected as State Controller.”
