Sacramento, CA – The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council today applauded the Senate Labor, Public Employment and Retirement Committee for supporting AB 5 (Gonzalez), which upholds the California Supreme Court Dynamex decision, ensuring workers receive basic protections, including minimum wage, unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation, under the law.
“UFCW members across the state are taking a stand against mega-rich gig companies who misclassify workers to avoid providing basic labor protections,” said Bruce Lien Jr, a worker at FoodMaxx and member of UFCW Local 5. “All workers in California deserve a safe and healthy workplace where they can make enough to support their family, and AB 5 will prevent these gig economy companies from intentionally undermining worker stability and security. UFCW members applaud the Senate Labor Committee for respecting California’s labor laws and we look forward to working with the full California Senate and Governor Newsom to ensure drivers have access to basic labor protections and benefits.”
