Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council issued the following statement after Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed AB 1961 (Wicks). AB 1961 would have developed, for the first time in state history, a strategic masterplan to end hunger in California. The following statement may be attributed to Amber Parrish, executive director, UFCW Western States Council:
“We’re disappointed that AB 1961 will not become law this year. It’s past time that California study our food system and supply chain. Every day UFCW members see customers in their stores who can’t afford to buy food, who choose between items to put back, and who must tell their children they can’t get a small treat today. It’s unacceptable when the people of the nation’s fifth largest food supplier state can’t afford or have limited access to food. We commit to pushing California to create a strategic master plan so no Californian goes hungry in the future.”
