UFCW Western States Council Names California Attorney General Rob Bonta as “Person of the Year”

Sacramento, CA – The United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council today announced it has named California Attorney General Rob Bonta as Person of the Year.

Rob Bonta is the 34th Attorney General of the State of California, the first person of Filipino descent and the second Asian-American to occupy the position. Attorney General Bonta’s passion for justice and fairness was ingrained in him by his parents, instilling in him the lessons they learned from the United Farm Workers and the civil rights movement. His parents lit a fire inside him to fight against injustice — to stand up for those who are taken advantage of or harmed.

As the People’s Attorney, he sees seeking accountability from those who abuse their power and harm others as one of the most important functions of the job. In elected office, he has taken on powerful interests and advanced systemic change — pursuing corporate accountability, standing up for workers, punishing big polluters, and fighting racial injustice. He has led statewide fights for racial, economic, and environmental justice and worked to further the rights of immigrant families, renters, and working Californians.

“Attorney General Bonta has always been a champion for working people, but this year he has gone above and beyond,” said Amber Parrish, executive director, UFCW Western States Council. “Attorney General Bonta helped ensure UFCW members can keep their jobs, provide for their families, and ensure our communities have access to fresh, affordable food by suing to stop the merger between Kroger and Albertsons. His passion for justice and for workers is evident in everything he does. That’s why he was our first and only choice for our 2024 Person of the Year.”

UFCW Western States Council also named two members of UFCW Local 1167, Alma Espinoza and Sharon Whittle, as Members of the Year during the award ceremony on Wednesday, May 1, 2024.
