Sacramento, CA – The 200,000 members of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council are celebrating victories in two key races that demonstrate how workers standing together can defeat big corporations that stand in the way of progress for working families:
- Senate District 5 – In the race to replace Senator Cathleen Galgiani, UFCW members supported Assemblymember Susan Eggman
- Senate District 15 – UFCW members chose Dave Cortese to represent working people
“UFCW members work hard keeping our state’s food safe, protecting our patients and investing in our communities and when we back a candidate we work just as hard to see her through to victory as we’ve done with Susan Eggman in this primary,” said Jacques Loveall, president, UFCW Local 8-Golden State. “Susan shares our commitment to affordable health care, protecting our environment and has a proven track record of standing up for working families and we look forward to doing what it takes to demonstrate our voices and our vote when we elect Susan as State Senator this November.”
“UFCW members are proud to stand behind Dave Cortese and work to elect a Senator who is dedicated to California’s working people,” said Jim Araby, director of strategic campaigns, UFCW Local 5. “Dave’s passion for lowering the cost of healthcare for Californians and addressing our homelessness and housing crises is why we will continue wearing out our shoes and making our voices heard in person and online to make sure he is our next state Senator this November. We can’t wait to get to work alongside Dave to help create good jobs and opportunities for all Californians.”
“UFCW members spent countless hours in this primary election knocking on doors, phone banking and spreading the word to their family, co-workers and friends about our chosen candidates. Today we showed our votes and our voices matter,” said Andrea Zinder, president, UFCW Western States Council and UFCW Local 324. “Susan Eggman and Dave Cortese are candidates who will stand up for California’s workers and help create quality jobs that support our families and communities. We’re proud to stand behind them for the general election this November.”
