Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council issued the following statement in response to the federal government’s actions, which have caused millions of Californians, Arizonans and Nevadans to lose access to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The following statement may be attributed to Amber Parrish, executive director, UFCW Western States Council:
“80% of SNAP benefits are spent in grocery stores. That means UFCW members are proudly on the front lines of the SNAP program, helping parents and seniors buy the groceries they need for their families. However, these devastating actions from the federal government will not only deprive Americans of critical grocery resources, it will put our hard-working members out of jobs.
“Theft will go up, putting workers in danger. Companies will cut hours, leading workers to not get paid enough to make ends meet, or even lay people off if groceries aren’t being sold. Our members are already living paycheck to paycheck, and even a day of missed pay could cause them to lose their housing, cars, or be unable to put food on the table themselves. And throughout this, SNAP food assistance won’t be there to help them as they look for their next job.
“SNAP is vital, not just for families facing food insecurity, but for our communities. If dollars aren’t going into workers’ pockets, they’re not going into our communities either. UFCW Western States Council won’t sit by and let the federal government harm our members.”
