Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council released the following statement on Governor Gavin Newsom’s call for legislation cracking down on property crime. The following statement may be attributed to Amber Baur, Executive Director, UFCW Western States Council:
“The crumbling social safety net, mental health crisis, and an addiction epidemic have put UFCW members on the frontlines of community safety, something that they never signed up for when they started work at Safeway or CVS. These workers deserve proven solutions to prevent crime that will keep them safe, such as investing in good union jobs, worker training and education, and workplace safety, and providing good, quality healthcare.
“UFCW is supportive of Governor Newsom’s call for reducing property crime by extending the retail task force indefinitely, and we encourage our elected officials to look at legislative solutions with effective strategies that UFCW has seen – implementing higher staffing levels in the stores, using full-service cashier lanes, and having security staff at entrances.”
