Sacramento, CA – Today, the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Western States Council applauded Governor Gavin Newsom’s announcement that he will appoint Alex Padilla to replace Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris in the United States Senate. UFCW Western States Council released the following statements on the announcement:
“The 170,000 UFCW members in California enthusiastically applaud Governor Newsom’s choice of Alex Padilla to serve as California’s next Senator,” said John Grant, president, UFCW Local 770. “Padilla has been a longtime champion of the values we hold dear: protecting California workers’ rights to organize, fighting for fair wages and affordable healthcare, and expanding our state’s voting rights, so we know firsthand how he will be a staunch champion in the Senate for working families nationwide. We can’t wait to work with him in his new role to help Californians and our nation recover from this pandemic and to create a more balanced economy where our children and families can thrive.”
“Alex Padilla is the right choice at the right time to represent California in the US Senate,” said Andrea Zinder, president, UFCW Western States Council and UFCW Local 324. “Padilla will be a strong senator, ensuring California continues to push forward in our fight for economic and racial justice while we recover from COVID-19. Padilla’s leadership in guiding California’s 2020 election through unprecedented challenges shows just how valuable his voice and skills will be in the Senate, and we can’t wait to see him fight for workers and families in this new position.”
